What we do for patients

Peace of mind, contentment and relief from pain and other symptoms are central to everything we do for our patients.

We provide specialist palliative care to people in Sheffield who have advanced and progressive illnesses for which there are no cures. We attend to their emotional and spiritual wellbeing, their wishes anxieties and hopes.

Our purpose is to support, comfort, inspire and improve the quality of life of local people, like you, with these types of physical conditions. We want you to live as normally as possible, for as long as possible. We’ll help you to do this by providing you, your family and carers with high-quality care and support, compassion and respect.

After being referred to us by a healthcare professional there are many different ways in which we can provide care and support depending on your individual needs. All of our medical and nursing care is planned and provided by a highly-qualified, specialist team of medical consultants, specialist registrars, doctors and nurses. This specialist team have particular expertise in the control of pain and other symptoms associated with life-limiting conditions. We support patients with Advanced Care Planning, such as Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care & Treatment (ReSPECT) - helping people to discuss and decide the care they would like for themselves as their situation changes.

For some patients a stay in our In Patient Centre can be really beneficial, whilst others under our care may be more suited to being looked after in their own home by our Specialist Palliative Care Community Team. These patients might also benefit from accessing our Patient & Family Support services for a set number of weeks, to receive a tailored programme of treatments, therapies and activities.

We offer a range of therapies to all our patients. Depending on what service the patient is accessing, these can include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social care, wellbeing services, as well as guidance on managing medicines.

We also have a Spiritual Care Team who are there to be a compassionate and confidential listener and support to anyone – whatever faith you are from, and if you are of no faith at all. Some services are available to patients’ carers, and we have a Bereavement Team who can help to support families and friends of those who have been cared for by St Luke’s.
