Family stride out in memory of Sheffield United fan David

WHEN the family of Sheffield United fan David Crampton decided they wanted to raise money for the St Luke’s Virtual Night Strider challenge, they chose a soccer theme.

That meant completing an 11 mile walk from Rotherham’s New York Stadium to David’s beloved Sheffield United ground at Bramall Lane and then on to Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium.

And having finished the challenge in just over four hours, the team have raised more than £1,000 for St Luke’s, where cancer patient David - who lived in Wincobank - spent his final days.

Making up the family group were David’s son Jonathan and his grandson Alfie along with niece Hayley Robinson, her dad and brother Stephen and Matthew, her partner Kieron Stancill and family friend Richard Scarlett.

“We had been planning to do the St Luke’s Night Strider if it had gone ahead as planned but when it became a virtual event we said we’d do something ourselves,” said Hayley.

“David was a big Sheffield United fan and so is his son, though the rest of us are Sheffield Wednesday supporters and a football walk seemed like a great idea.

“We are a really close family and wanted to do something together and we originally thought about just walking from Sheffield United to Hillsborough.

“When we realised that wasn’t enough of a challenge, we decided to set off from the New York Stadium in Rotherham and we had a great time.

“We were so pleased to be able to do this for my uncle, raise money and give back to the amazing hospice who helped make David’s final weeks and days as comfortable as possible at home and at the hospice where he sadly passed away.”
