Cath’s short cut is a bit of a shaggy dog story

IN times of lockdown, you have to utilise the tools that are available to get a job done…even if that does mean using the dog clippers to have your hair cut!

Midwifery lecturer Cath Burke raised more than £4,000 for our patient services after deciding to shave her head as a symbol of support for a friend who is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Husband Brian was elected to carry out the chop at the couple’s Beauchief home and he did invest in a pair of professional hairdressers’ scissors to get the job started.

But when it came to completing the close crop, he turned to the family’s dog clippers to create Cath’s sharp new look.

“My close friend has begun chemotherapy and will lose her hair as she cannot use the cooling cap due to Covid-19 restrictions,” said Cath.

“We can't even meet up so I wanted to do something to support her that would show her how much we think of her as she is a special person.

“We both have a good head of hair and I felt I can support her by removing mine at the same time as she loses hers.”

Cath’s hair has been donated to the Little Princess Trust, the charity that provides real hair wigs to children and young people experiencing hair loss, with more than £4,000 in sponsorship going to St Luke’s Hospice.

“St Luke's is a wonderful hospice that Sheffield residents are lucky to have and it is very close to both our hearts,” said Cath.

“The only problem for me is that since I had it done the temperature has dropped so it’s a bit chilly up top.

“But my hair will grow again and I am so happy to have been able to help St Luke’s in this way.”
