At the end of summer, a group of devoted friends, family, and supporters took on an incredible challenge: cycling from Nottingham to Sheffield in loving memory of Ben Degg, who died at the age of 32.
The 71-mile ride marked ten years since Ben’s passing, after he received compassionate end of life care at St Luke’s. Starting from Ben’s home in Nottingham and finishing at The Broadfield pub in Sheffield, where Ben once worked and shared many happy memories, the route was as meaningful as it was demanding.
Through sheer determination, the group raised an amazing £8,442 including gift aid in support of St Luke’s, to give back for the care Ben received.
This was the group’s third charity bike ride, the first two being held during Ben’s illness. Among this year’s riders were Ben’s son, George - taking part for the first time - as well as his wife Jen, and other riders who joined the first events over ten years ago.
Supporting from the side-lines was Ben’s mum, Trish, who kept spirits high with refreshments and encouragement throughout the day.
Reflecting on the challenge was Ben’s wife, Jen. “Ben was cared for by the most incredible team at St Luke’s during the later stages of his illness,” she said.
“Their compassion and support meant the world to Ben and all of us, and we’re so proud to support of the hospice that gave us so much when we needed it most.”
Rebecca Walker, St Luke’s In Memory Fundraiser, added: “It’s amazing to receive such wonderful support from Ben’s family and friends, who took on this challenge to mark Ben’s anniversary.”
“Fundraising in memory of a loved one is a powerful way to honour their life, and leave a lasting tribute. I feel so honoured in my role to meet so many inspirational people taking on incredible challenges in support of those they love.
“We hope Ben’s story inspires others to support St Luke’s, whether through a regular donation, setting up a tribute page, or taking on a unique challenge.”
