Your guide to leaving a gift in your Will to St Luke’s

We've been here for 55 years, help us be here for 55 more

The gifts we receive in Wills are a crucial part of our charitable funding - without them, we simply could not continue to exist as we do.

Supporting us in this way is a powerful gesture that ensures our vital palliative care is there for those who need it, for many generations to come. It is a gift made now, which costs nothing in your lifetime, but can help your support live on, not only for St Luke’s but for the people of our incredible city.

This is my hospice care: Sue's Story

Sue Cameron and Dad
Pictured: Sue Cameron smiling with her dad.

Sue Cameron has been a dedicated supporter of St Luke’s for many years, ever since witnessing the profound difference the hospice made to her dad, and to her whole family, during the final stage of his life following a long diagnosis with lung cancer.

Now a long-term supporter and volunteer, Sue has taken another meaningful step by choosing to leave a gift in her Will to St Luke’s, to ensure other families in Sheffield can receive the same compassionate care.

Sue is passionate about sharing her story. She hopes it will highlight the transformative impact hospice care can have, offering comfort, dignity and moments of hope during life’s final stages. She also wants to encourage others to consider leaving a legacy, so that St Luke’s can continue its vital work long into the future.

Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions and concerns regarding Wills.

Making a Will ensures that your wishes are carried out after you die. If you don’t have a valid Will, your estate will be distributed as directed by the rules of intestacy, which may not meet your needs or those of your family. For more information on the financial reasons to make a Will, see the Gov.uk website.

It’s important to get independent advice from a solicitor or a professional Will writer when making or updating your Will. To find a solicitor local to you, visit The Law Society website.

Download our guide of things you will need to consider and discuss with your family and friends before meeting with a solicitor.

The most common gifts we receive are for a specific cash amount (pecuniary gift) or a percentage share of an estate (residuary gift). We also benefit from other gifts, like specific items (e.g. paintings, jewellery etc.) or gifts in trust. Your solicitor or professional Will writer will be able to advise you on which gift you would like to leave to St Luke’s.

The most important information to include is our name, address and registered charity number along with the type of gift you wish to leave to St Luke’s:

St Luke’s Hospice
Little Common Lane
Sheffield
S11 9NE

Registered charity number 254402.

Your solicitor or professional Will writer can help you to add a form called a codicil to your existing Will. It is important to always ask a solicitor or professional Will writer to make changes to your Will, if the changes aren’t made correctly you could invalidate your Will.

No – gifts in Wills come in all shapes and sizes. By leaving a legacy, you will be making a real difference and ensuring we’re there for future generations.

We’re with you every step of the way - if you would like more information about leaving a gift or have any questions, you can contact our Fundraising team by emailing [email protected] or calling 0114 235 7570.
