White Lion and Mahogany Newt

White Lion teamIn memory of Drew Archbould who died at home at the age of 44 last December, his friends and family organised a fundraising event at St Luke's in gratitute for the "wonderful support" that the hospice's community team gave to him and his family.

Drew was well known on the Sheffield rock scene, and for his motor racing skills. A tribute gig at the White Lion, Chesterfield Road featured Mahogany Newt and Chris MacMahon of Treebeard. The tribute night raised more than £680 for St Luke's, and special thanks go to landlord Danny for his support, and the musicians, who generously donated their fee for the night to St Luke's.

PwC

PWC team

Enthusiastic runners from accountancy firm PwC have raised £4,000 for their official charity, St Luke’s. The company put a 14-strong team into the Sheffield Half Marathon, raising a final total of £2,000, which was then doubled by PwC through its matched giving programme.

Taking part were colleagues David Thurkettle, Julia Delaney, Nick Cook, Matt Kaufman, Kelly Marshall, David Banks, Robert Whitehead, Tom Corns, Nick Hedley, Geoff Taster, Neil Baxter, Chris Robson, John Roberts and Sarah Maloney.

Director David Thurkettle commented:“I am pleased that so many staff took part in the run to raise funds for St. Luke's. This reflects really well both on our staff, who put themselves through blood, sweat and not a few tears, and on a great cause, St Luke's Hospice. We're delighted to be able to help support such an iconic charity in Sheffield, one that provides wonderful care to so many people, and one that touches so many people's lives.”

Sheffield Theatres

Fancy dressSheffield Theatres staff recently chose St Luke's as their charity of the year, and their first fundraising day, of several planned, included fancy dress, a cake bake and bucket collections at performances. It raised an impressive £621.

St Luke's and Sheffield Theatres share a 40th birthday this year - the Crucible Theatre opened in 1971 - so it's great to be able to link up with another Sheffield institution.

Steve Stevens

Steve StevensBrighton-based nightclub boss Steve Stevens is heading for a place in the Guinness Book of World Records after completing a marathon solo disco dancing stint at the Aneglik nightclub in Worthing in memory of Rebekah Stanley, a St Luke’s patient who lost her battle against cancer last year.

Steve decided to take to the dance floor and smash the world record of 123 hours and 15 minutes. He danced for a dizzying total of 131 hours, with rest periods of five minutes in every hour. And even though he kept energy levels at a maximum with a diet of fruit, porridge, jacket potatoes, chips, lasagne and protein drinks, he still managed to lose a quarter of a stone over the five days.

“I had 15 DJs supporting me and playing some fantastic music and I’ve always been a dancer, so I really enjoyed every minute of it", said Steve, as he visited St Luke’s to hand over the proceeds of his record-breaking session.

“At four of five in the morning I’d be falling asleep and dancing at the same time but there were plenty of people there to call out my name and keep me going and as soon as the sun came up I’d be fine again."

Steve's amazing feat has so far raised more than £1,800 for St Luke's.

“We've been bowled over by the level of support from Morrisons,” said Hannah Jordan, our Corporate and Trusts Fundraising Manager .

“£23,000 can do so much in helping us to maintain our high level of care for our patients. We're very grateful to Morrisons, to their generous customers and to all the volunteers who gave their time to help with our bucket collections throughout the year.”

The Hickey family

The Hickeys

Kenneth Hickey spent only a few days at St Luke’s as his long battle with cancer came to an end last year. Now his family have become enthusiastic fundraisers for St Luke’s – starting with a donation of £2,265.

“My dad arrived at St Luke’s on the Thursday and died on the Sunday but in that time the standard of care was unbelievable,” said daughter Gemma. “We can’t praise what they did enough. It wasn’t just about my dad – it was about caring for the whole family and supporting us through a very difficult time.”

Gemma and mum Lynne held their first fundraising event at Firth Park Bowling Centre, where Kenneth had been bowling for more than 30 years.

“We had so much support that night, it was unbelievable,” said Gemma. “The place was packed. We’ll definitely be doing other things for St Luke’s in the future – in fact, we want to hold at least one fundraising event every year because it’s the least we can do for the hospice!”
