The great Sheffield run off

Which university's best? There's only one way to find out... run!

University of Sheffiield Hallam Varsity 10k St Luke'sThe Sheffield Varsity 10k on Sunday 25 March will be the first time that The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University have gone head to head over 10,000m.

The event, which will begin and end at the Don Valley Stadium, is being organised by friends Alison Muir and Alice Fairhall, themselves former city students. Alison now works in the Alumni Office of the Unisversity of Sheffield, where she was herself a student, while Alice runs her own company, Fairplay Sports Management.

The race will be supporting St Luke’s, and at least £3 from each entry plus 100 per cent of all profits from the race will go directly to the hospice to go towards the £4 million we need each year just to keep supporting people with incurable illnesses in Sheffield.

“We both enjoyed competing for our universities in various sports but never more than when we got to compete against each other at the annual varsity tournament,” said Alison.

“During a walking holiday in Wales we were reminiscing about the fantastic encounters over our years as students and decided we wanted to relive it and have the chance to rekindle the friendly rivalry but this time with no team selection. So after running it by a few enthusiastic friends we find ourselves the proud race directors of Sheffield Varsity 10k.

We are so looking forward to this event and look forward to finding out who will be the first overall champion. And we wanted to support St Luke’s because we know it is an extremely popular Sheffield charity that needs to raise millions of pounds every year.”

The 10km race starts at Don Valley Stadium and runners will complete a three lap route, including a couple of short sharp inclines. Full changing, shower, refreshment and spectator facilities will all be available within the stadium.

All entrants will receive a free University of Sheffield or Sheffield Hallam University t-shirt to wear at the race, but members of the public are welcome to sign up for the event too.
