Tony goes back to the 70s

Who better to help celebrate our 40th birthday than football legend Tony Currie, one of the star names in 1970s sport in our city.

Tony Currie and nursesIt was the year that saw Rod Stewart’s Maggie May hit the top of the charts… along with Ernie the Fastest Milkman in the West.

At the cinema, fans could enjoy Sean Connery’s return to Bond in Diamonds Are Forever or be moved by the musical drama of Fiddler on the Roof.

And in the world of sport, a young footballer star called Tony Currie was making his mark for Sheffield United at Bramall Lane before going on to play for England.

It was also the year that saw the opening of St Luke’s – the first facility of its kind outside London.

So who better, four decades later, to help St Luke’s celebrate its 40th birthday than Tony, still an ambassador for the team that made him one of the biggest names in 1970s sport.

Tony, the Blades legend who was known as ‘TC’ to thousands of United fans, visited patients at the hospice and also found time to join staff to promote the Back to 1971 Birthday Party - in association with Hot Pants, spnsored by alpharooms.com and supported by The Leadmill and Sheffield International Venues - which will be held at the Sheffield City Hall Ballroom on Saturday, November 26.

Sheffield United have partnered St Luke’s as part of The Football League’s official charity partnership with Help the Hospices for the 2011/12 season.

“I seem to remember that some of us actually visited to hospice when it first opened and it’s really good to be back again,” Tony said.

“The service provided by St Luke’s is extremely important to all the people of Sheffield and the Back to 1971 Birthday Party sounds like a great way to get involved.”

Tickets to the event ,which includes a ‘70s disco and dancers, fairground rides, live performers, an ice rink and refreshments, cost £20 and are available at www.arenaticketshop.co.uk or on 0114 256 5567.
