Social work

St Luke's social work department offers help with the practical, financial and social needs of patients, families and carers.

Three social work assistants work alongside the Hospice At Home team and see patients at the Day Hospices and in the community. They liaise with other professionals and agencies to access a wide range of relevant services and resources. St Luke's social workers work on the in-patient unit to help with plans for discharge and to provide general support to patients and their families and carers.

The social work team is involved in education and training education and training and welcomes students from the SYNEM consortium for full-time placements.
Bereavement support

St Luke's offers bereavement follow-up to families and close friends of those who have been patients of St Luke's. A group of staff and trained volunteer bereavement care workers offer telephone support or home visits to try to ensure that our services respond to the needs of relatives and close friends. Group support is offered at The Drop-In.

This group meets every fortnight at the Quaker Meeting House, St James' Street in Sheffield city centre. It offers an opportunity to meet others who have also experienced a recent loss and share similar feelings.
The bereavement service is co-ordinated by the social work department in the hospice.
