"Sponsor a Nurse"

St Luke’s specialist nurses do more than control symptoms and pain, they offer support with all the other difficulties that a serious illness can bring. The nursing team work hard to meet our patients and their loved ones needs. Encompassing their physical, spiritual and emotional needs and supporting them at a very difficult time in their lives.

The team pride themselves on offering care which is especially tailored to meet our patients’, families and carers individual wishes. Offering a compassionate ear, time to listen, a shoulder to cry on, a joke to share or, a bright smile in the morning.

At St Luke’s it really is the little things that do make a big difference, St Luke’s philosophy is all about taking the time to improve the lives of others.

Everyday the Hospice cares for patients and their families and wherever possible helps to create special memories, from organising a beautiful wedding at the Hospice for a patient and his bride; or escorting a patient to witness the wedding of her son. They’ve even gone high tech by setting up a webcam, so a patient could see his family in Hong Kong.

At St Luke’s we may not be able to add days to life, but we can add life to days.

Become a Volunteer

In addition to its staff, the Hospice is indebted to its army of over 500 unpaid volunteers, who perform a variety of functions both at the Hospice and at the Hospice's six charity shops.

There are volunteer nurses, carers and bereavement counsellors, as well as general volunteers, who carry out non-essential but nevertheless important non-professional duties at the Hospice, such as helping in ward kitchens, serving tea, working at the charity shops, sewing, arranging flowers, working on reception etc.

There is a specialist induction course for those, who wish to volunteer as nurses or carers but have no professional training or qualification. Normally these people begin by working in the ward kitchen.

Our volunteer workers include young people, many of whom combine their work with studying at school or college. For information on becoming a volunteer, contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator Christine Sammans or call the Hospice on 0114 236 9911 or become a volunteer
