WILKES EDUCATION AND RESOURCE CENTRE

St. Luke’s commitment to palliative care education began in 1977. Today the Centre offers undergraduate programmes validated by Sheffield Hallam University (SHU). Design of programmes is purposefully flexible to accommodate students combining work with study. Students select modules reflecting their individual preference for timing and content. Group and individual tutorials are programmed during each module. Specialist Lecturers are also available for support on other days.

The onsite resource Centre provides ready access to specialist books and journals, advice and access to electronic literature searches, and photocopying service managed by the librarian. Comfortable, spacious and well equipped, the Centre provides facilities conducive to study, with refreshments and lunch available in the hospice dining room. The Centre has free parking.
The MSc in Supportive and Palliative Care has been developed in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. Taught palliative care modules will be offered at St Luke’s and those at distance learning at the university. Applications for all postgraduate modules are via the SHU website.

The Wilkes Education and Resource Centre forms part of the developing Clinical Learning Education Audit and Research Institute at the hospice.

Forming part of the Wilkes Education and Resource Centre, St Luke's Medical Library is a unique and specialist resource covering a wide variety of subjects related to the many facets of hospice, supportive and palliative care. It contains over 3,500 books of medical and nursing interest, with main sections devoted to care of the dying, pain and symptom control, ethics, spiritual care, counselling and bereavement studies. A wide range of general, specialist nursing and medical journals are housed at the library.

Lending facilities are available to members of staff, volunteers and students on courses run by St Luke's Education Centre in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. The library is usually available on a reference only basis to people from outside the hospice. An enquiry service via telephone, post and e-mail for information on all aspects of supportive and palliative care is also provided.

A specialist bookshop with various books, pamphlets and articles on the subject areas within supportive and palliative care is available to all interested parties.

A limited photocopying service is also available for a fee.
